Sidney Crosby’s Net Worth

Sidney Crosby is one of the richest hockey players of all time and behind only Alexander Ovechkin in terms of the highest net worth among current National Hockey League (NHL) players. The Pittsburgh Penguins star center and franchise player has a net worth of $55 million, although some wealth and score predictions have that figure as high as $70 million.

A native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia (the same town as NHL superstar and recent Stanley Cup winner Nathan MacKinnon), Crosby played at the prestigious Shattuck St. Mary’s program in his youth before being drafted to play for the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He was dominant in his two seasons in the QMJHL.

Sidney’s Success

Crosby led his team and the league in scoring in both seasons with 135 and 168 points, respectively. He also played for Canada at the U20 World Junior Championships those years and accumulated 14 points in 12 tournament games.

Selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Crosby was a superstar from the outset, recording 102 points (39 goals and 63 assists) in his first year in the league. He recorded at least 100 points in three of the next four seasons, after which he suffered a series of concussions that derailed his Hall of Fame career and jeopardized his playing future.

Fortunately, Crosby is now well clear of those issues and has played more than 1,100 regular-season games. He has 517 goals and 892 assists for 1,409 career points in those games. He is a three-time Stanley Cup winner and has 201 points in 180 playoff games.

All Time Numbers

As far as individual accolades go, Crosby is a two-time Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner and two-time Art Ross Trophy winner. He has also been voted by his peers as the best player in the league on three occasions and is a two-time Hart Trophy winner. He won his last major award, the Conn Smythe Trophy, as the playoff MVP, in the 2016-17 season.

While he hasn’t been a dominant force in recent years, he’s still consistently one of the league’s most dangerous players. At 34 years old, he recorded 84 points in 69 regular-season games last year.

Outside of the NHL

Crosby also has an incredible international resume, including two Olympic gold medals. He scored one of the most memorable goals in Canadian hockey history in overtime of the 2010 Olympic finals against the United States.

Sid, “The Kid,” has made more than $150 million in salary during his NHL career, the entirety of which has been with the Penguins. After his three-year entry-level deal, he signed a five-year, $43 million contract with the Penguins in 2008.

The Contract

Upon the conclusion of that contract, Crosby signed a 12-year, $104 million contract extension with Pittsburgh in 2013. He earned most of that salary during the early years of the contract. Crosby now has only three years left and will make $3 million each year.

Considering the contracts handed out in today’s NHL, Crosby could have made a lot more money if he had signed a short-term deal with the Pens but opted for long-term security.

Sponsorship

Like most other professional athletes, Crosby has been afforded plenty of sponsorship and endorsement opportunities throughout his career. In fact, he’s one of the league’s most marketable players – or at least was before the rise of Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.

To date, Crosby has worked with sponsors such as Gatorade, Reebok, Bell, Adidas, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Tim Hortons. He has been in a few Tim Hortons commercials with his hometown pal Nathan MacKinnon, but it’s clear acting won’t be his second job in retirement.

In fact, Crosby was such a can’t-miss prospect as a teenager that Reebok signed him to an endorsement deal with more than $1 million. This was the largest endorsement deal in all of hockey at the time, not just junior hockey. He signed a seven-year deal for $10 million with Reebok in 2010.
